High Country Off Highway Recreation

In the west end of the South Platte Ranger District, from Bailey northwest to Kenosha Pass and the Continental Divide are a number of backroads ranging from moderately easy to very challenging in difficulty. Much of the western end of the district is rich in mining history. Enjoy historical artifacts you find, but leave them where you found them for others to enjoy. Be very careful around around old mine sites and beware of vertical shafts and collapsing tunnels. Most old mines are privately owned.

Depending on the timing and depth of winter snows, roads may close as early as October and not open up until late July. Roads may also be gated through the spring thaw to prevent road damage. Additional information on closures and conditions may be obtained by contacting the South Platte Ranger District at 303-275-5610.
