HANCOCK PASS

Road begins: Midway between Salida and Buena Vista, turn west onto County Road 162. This road travels up the Chalk Creek Canyon to the historic townsite of St. Elmo. Travel west for approximately 16 miles to the Grizzly Lake parking area. Just past the parking area, watch for a sign indicating Forest road 295. Turn left on FR 295 and travel for about 5 ½ miles to the old townsite of Hancock. From Hancock follow the signs to Hancock Lake and Hancock Pass. The road travel over the Continental Divide and loops up to the west portal of the Alpine Tunnel. The road is a rugged 4-wheel drive and travelers should be prepared with adequate water, spare parts and plenty of fuel.

TINCUP PASS

Road begins: Midway between Salida and Buena Vista, turn west onto County Road 162.Travel west for approximately 18 miles to St. Elmo. This historic townsite is one of the oldest existing mining and railroad towns in the state of Colorado. Although long-since past its boom days, St. Elmo’s buildings are well-preserved and worth a walk through town. When approaching St. Elmo, reduce your speed and stop at the only stop sign in town. Travel down the main street and turn right, crossing a wooden bridge. A white schoolhouse is located to the north of the bridge. Turn left after the bridge and travel west up a steep incline. This is FR 267 and the beginning of the Tincup Pass road. The road winds west for approximately 6 miles to the top of the pass. The road continues down the west side of the Continental Divide to the town of Tincup. The road is considered to be a moderate 4-wheel drive road on the east side with rough stretches on the west side.
