Canard/Morais Crash, New to DR and more...

Welcome to the Weekly Dirt, the place to go each week to get your off-road fix. With three Supercross rounds in the books, it's starting to look like we've got a race on our hands. Three winners in three rounds is a great sign, not to mention three bike manufacturers on top of the podium as well: Kawasaki, KTM and now Honda. In the meantime, off-road racing kicked off this week, as well, with Hare Scrambles in the east and Hare and Hound in the west. Meanwhile, the opening round of the Rekluse/AMA National Enduro series is this coming Sunday in Sumter, South Carolina. So get ready for the Dirt, there's a lot to cover.

KTM Rear Brake Mod

I’ve found that the rear brake lever on most, if not all, KTMs is designed somewhat poorly.

Ben Reingold / Boise, ID
I’ve found that the rear brake lever on most, if not all, KTMs is designed somewhat poorly. It’s not a matter of “if” but “when” it will eventually hit the sidecase to mar up the aluminum and create a hole or crack. I’ve personally witnessed another rider punch a hole in the case as a result of a healthy bang from a rock on the brake lever and then lose oil on the trail—bad deal. I own a 2006 KTM 450 EXC and quite some time ago put a preventative measure in place to avoid this problem. First, file away, at an angle, the first set of teeth near the case. Next, use a small piece of scrap rubber tubing and cut it so that it form-fits the brake pedal facing the case. Cut two holes so that the two bolts hold it in place and you’re done. Another quick tip is to use slick nylon tape (for dresser drawers) and place it on the lower portion of the sidecase for protection. The adhesive property of this stuff is amazing.

Long-Term Brake Reservoir Fix

A dirt bike’s brake bleed screw rubber caps have a habit of being torn off or damaged.

Tommy Thomson / Belfair, WA
A dirt bike’s brake bleed screw rubber caps have a habit of being torn off or damaged. This allows water (then rust) and crud to get inside the bleed screw, thus making it impossible to bleed your brakes without first removing them to clean the stuff out. My solution is to remove the brake bleed screws, throw away the rubber thingy, tap the end of the bleed screw with a No. 6-32 tap and then install a screw about 3⁄8 inch long, and the problem is solved forever. It isn’t fancy or super trick, but it is very effective.

Every year when the new bikes start to hit the marketplace and show up in magazines, I look at what each manufacturer has done to their bikes. Some years you see completely new bikes and other years you see Bold New Graphics. Each time I see a new bike I like, I go out to my garden to see if my money tree is growing. I must be a horrible gardener or my kids like to raid the money tree. Either way, each year buying a new bike is out of my budget. Fortunately, I've been able to find quality used bikes to satisfy my addiction to single-track.

I was itching to get a new bike. I had big plans. I was going to take her to my favorite riding area and treat her to the finest aftermarket products money could buy. Then maybe in a year or two, we would part ways so I could move on to something younger and better looking. I couldn't wait to load her into my truck and stare in the rearview mirror on the way home. At least that was my initial plan. Unfortunately, the company I worked for was bought out and thousands of employees were laid off, including myself. Simply put, I didn't have the money for a new bike. I experienced the harsh reality that my 2008 KTM 250 XC would have to last another year. My itch for a new model turned into an irritation.

Trail Tip

Ramone Palladini
Simi Valley, CA

I'm a flooring contractor, so I have a lot of carpet samples lying around. Each sample is big enough to stand on, and has finished edges so it won't unravel. I keep a couple of them in the truck for riders in our group to stand on while changing into riding gear. It keeps you from burning or freezing your toes and dirtying your socks. You should be able to pick one up cheap at a home supply store. Or check with carpet outlets. They may have discontinued styles they no longer need.

2011 TM EN 250 - Dirt Rider Magazine
Like a lot of riders, I’ve always had a strange fascination with TM motorcycles. There’s something about trick, limited-run off-road bikes that really grabs my attention, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t admire those lightning-fast Italians on their mysteriously blue (formerly pink) steeds.

In fact, I spent two seasons as an amateur racer aboard full-size TM 80s (a 125cc chassis with an 80cc engine in it, much to the rulebook-twisting frustration of my local AMA referee, I might add), and my experience with the bikes was definitely a positive one. It’s safe to say that most riders don’t have anything against TMs, but perhaps due to apprehension or just a general distrust of the unfamiliar bikes the brand hasn’t seemed to gain much traction in the U.S.

We throw a leg over BMW's 450 enduro weapon.

In the current state of off-road motorcycles, there are few firsts. New models from the popular stable of brands are molded, updated copies of copies with new originals brought in every third or fourth revision. With the addition of the BMW G450X, that sequence has been interrupted. Now there's something completely new.

For $8398 plus a few fees and charges (don't forget all that tax) you are looking at a very expensive dirt bike, here. Nine grand for 400cc when for a few hundred more you can have a 450 or a 530? With power being everything is this a good idea on your part? Well, if you can believe anything, the motto, "size is everything" should ring true here.

It's Open Class

A lot of smaller brands are struggling. They seem to flourish for a time, then suddenly fade with fluctuations in currency exchange rates, changes in company leadership, problems with the suppliers of key parts or the tax laws of their countries. Depending on where a marquee is in this ebb and flow of fortune, going to an off-brand can be as risky as the thrill of an exotic ride is fun. Of the boutique brands, Husaberg has remained fairly steady. Stateside, there has been some juggling of the brand and its importer and issues with durability, especially in the late '90s, but for the most part there has been a solid (if sparse) dealer network and a consistent flow of parts. Now Husaberg has been integrated back under the control of KTM North America, which should further solidify the brand and its parts supply.
